Why so much roof staining?
Roof staining became more prominent when roofing manufacturers switched from producing asphalt shingles to fiberglass shingles. Fiberglass shingles hold moisture longer than asphalt and ceramic shingles that were used previously. Limestone was added as a filler material and this particular form of algae use the limestone (calcium carbonate) as a food source.
The black roof streaks are a species of cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa magma. Once common mostly in the southeast, it has been spreading recently throughout the Midwest. In Ohio, these black roof streaks are most noticeable on the north sides of roofs. If left untreated, the algae stains could continue to spread and could lead to premature rotting, aging, granule loss and ultimately, shingle failure.
